The White House Internship: A Public Service Leadership Program

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today's young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities.

Spring 2011 Program: Things to Know

The application period for the Spring 2011 program is now open. Applicants have until October 3, 2010 to apply for a Spring 2011 White House Internship. Please read instructions below and refer to our FAQ page for additional explanations.

The following are important questions to ask yourself prior to and after submitting your internship application. The link to apply can be found at the bottom of this page.

Am I eligible to apply for a White House Internship?

All White House Internship Program participants must be:

- A United States citizens;
- At least 18 years of age on or before the first day of the internship;
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community
college or university OR graduated in the past two years from undergraduate or
graduate program at a college, community college or universityOR;
- A veteran of the United States Armed forces who possesses a high school diploma or
its equivalent and has served on active duty at any time over the past two years

Am I available for the Spring 2011 internship program?

All White House Interns are expected to intern full-time for the entire team of the program::

The spring internship term runs from January 18, 2011 – May 6, 2011

Do I have all my application materials?

A completed packet includes:
- Two Essays: Each answer should be between 300-500 words in length;
- Current Resume: Your resume should not exceed one page;
- Three Letters of Recommendation;

How do I submit my application correctly?

All application materials must be submitted online.
The Spring 2011 application will be available from August 9, 2010 – October 3, 2010
All application materials MUST be submitted ON or BEFORE 11:59 p.m. EDT October 3, 2010
When an applicant has successfully submitted an application, the applicant will receive an email confirmation

When a letter of recommendation has been successfully submitted, both the applicant and the recommender will receive an email confirmation with the name of the recommender who has submitted a letter on the applicant's behalf

Dear Department Major:

The 2009-2010 academic year is fast approaching. I hope you are having an enjoyable summer and at the same time preparing to resume your academic studies for the fall 2010 semester. The faculty and staff of the Department of Urban Affairs, Social Sciences and Social Work look forward to welcoming you back to the University for an exciting and productive school year. Change continues to be the “UDC mantra”. Last year it was the launching of the Community College of UDC. This fall the new College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and Center for Urban Education become a reality.

It is imperative that as a continuing student, you register for fall 2010 courses on or before August 13, 2010 from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM at web4students.udc.edu. If you do not register on or before August 13th the following will apply:
• Late registration will be August 23 – 24, 2010 and you will be assessed a $150.00 late fee.
• Courses you may need to graduate may be cancelled due to low enrollment.
• Courses you may need for the fall semester may be filled and may not be offered for Spring 2011.

Please take note of the following important dates:
Classes will begin on Wednesday, August 25, 2010.

ADD/DROP: Course Adjustment: -August 25-August 31, 2010; 11:00 am -6:30 pm.

As a continuing student, you are expected to register for classes online. However, if you do not have a PIN number or have not been advised, please consult with your academic advisor prior to attempting to register online. During the registration period, faculty from your academic program will be available in their offices on August 23- 24, 2010 for advising.

If you plan to complete degree requirements for graduation during the Fall Semester, please remember that the last day to apply for graduation is Friday, September10, 2010. A revised department schedule of classes will be available in the Department during the registration period.

Memorial Service for Professor Robert Antoinin

You are invited to attend a memorial service for Professor Robert Antoinin, Adjunct Professor in the Administration of Justice Program. It will be held Monday, July 19, 2010 at 6:30pm in building 41, auditorium A-03 on the Van Ness Campus of the University of the District of Columbia.

ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE PROGRAM TO HOST FULBRIGHT POLICE RESEARCH SCHOLAR

The Administration of Justice Program, Department of Urban Affairs, Social Sciences and Social Work, College of Arts & Sciences welcomes Tola Munro of the Gwent Police Department in Wales, United Kingdom to the faculty beginning fall semester 2010 as a Fulbright Scholar. His research interest is in the area of domestic violence. As a Fulbright Police Research Scholar he will investigate intervention programs for male perpetrators of domestic abuse and study the responses of municipal police departments to domestic violence as compared to those of the UK. Additionally, he will serve as guest lecturer in the Dynamics of Domestic Violence course taught by Dr. Margaret A. Moore as well as collaborate with her and a number of community partners to convene a community based learning and research forum. The forum will examine law enforcement response to domestic violence from a national and international perspective. During his stay he will also be affiliated with the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland.

Officer Munro studied at Leicester Polytechnic, now known as De Montford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and a Masters degree in Manufacturing. He joined the Gwent Police force in 2006 and currently works as a dedicated neighborhood Constable for Bargoed in the Rhymney Valley. He is a trained Domestic Abuse Liaison Office.

Tola Munro was born in London and raised in Hertfordshire. He currently lives in Caerphilly, South Wales with his wife, son and three daughters.

The Fulbright Commission exists to advance knowledge and scholarship between scholars throughout the world and to bring new perspectives to the full spectrum of academic disciplines including law enforcement and other fields the applied fields.
