ABOUT THE URBAN SCHOLARS' ACADEMY
The Urban Scholars’ Academy is a division of First Year Experience Programs. This year, the program will run from June 28th to July 30th, bringing incoming freshmen to the UDC campus to participate in academic classes, tutorials, advising, and weekly excursions. Through these activities, the Academy helps new students transition to college life and to the UDC campus community. More information is available online at www.udc.edu/aac/fye.
PEER MENTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Peer Mentors will draw on their own experiences at UDC in order to serve as teaching assistants for Freshmen Orientation courses, act as peer advisors on UDC policies, and be personal mentors on issues of campus life to USI students. Peer Mentors will be expected to:
Attend and participate in all class meetings of Freshmen Orientation - 4 to 6 hours/week
Attend a weekly meeting with faculty and program staff - 1 hour/week
Hold drop-in advising hours at the Academic Advising Center - 8 hours/week
Participate in miscellaneous USI activities and events, such as Friday field trips, one weekend trip, workshops, and the closing awards ceremony - 5 to 6 hours/week
SKILLS & ELIGIBILITY
Must be a current UDC undergraduate
Must have effective interpersonal communication skills and be able to interact with students one-on-one and in larger group settings
Must be available to work for the entire 5-week summer program (6/28 - 7/30), including the weekend excursion from 7/16 – 7/18
Must be able to attend the Leadership Development Training on 6/22 & 6/23 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM, and able to participate in program evaluation on 8/2 & 8/3 (Time TBD)
Familiarity with Freshmen Orientation is preferred
Past leadership experience is a plus!
COMPENSATION & PAY
Peer Mentors will be hired on a part-time contract for 7 weeks (approximately 20 hours/week) and will be compensated with a stipend of $1,600. Peer Mentors will also receive a textbook voucher to use toward their Fall 2010 textbook expenses.
