ABOUT THE URBAN SCHOLARS' ACADEMY
The Urban Scholars’ Academy is a division of First Year Experience Programs. This year, the program will run from June 28th to July 30th, bringing incoming freshmen to the UDC campus to participate in academic classes, tutorials, advising, and weekly excursions. Through these activities, the Academy helps new students transition to college life and to the UDC campus community. More information is available online at www.udc.edu/aac/fye.
MATH TUTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Math Tutors will draw on their content knowledge, classroom experience, and study skills in order to serve as teaching assistants for Academy math classes, provide individual and group tutorials, and empower students for academic success. Math Tutors are expected to:
Attend and participate in all class meetings of their assigned Math course - 4 to 6 hours/week
Attend a weekly meeting with faculty and program staff - 1 hour/week
Hold drop-in tutorial hours at the Academic Advising Center - 12 hours/week
Participate in miscellaneous Academy activities and events, such as Friday field trips, student success workshops, and the closing awards ceremony – 6-10 hours/week
SKILLS & ELIGIBILITY
Must be a current UDC undergraduate
Must have effective interpersonal communication skills and be able to interact with students one-on-one and in larger group settings
Must have competency in Algebra, as demonstrated through prior coursework
Must be available to work for the entire 5-week program (6/28 - 7/30)
Must be able to attend the Leadership Development Training on 6/21 & 6/23 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM, and be able to participate in program evaluation on 8/2 & 8/3 (time TBD)
Past leadership experience is a plus!
COMPENSATION & PAY
Math Tutors will be hired on a full-time contract for 7 weeks (approximately 20 hours/week) and will be compensated with a stipend of $3,080. Math Tutors will also receive a textbook voucher to use toward their Fall 2010 textbook expenses.
